Bioprospecting and the Geopolitics of Genetic Resources in the Antarctic Treaty System: The White Gold Rush

Abstract

The continent of Antarctica, long governed as a peaceful global commons, is facing a significant challenge from bioprospecting. The search for commercially valuable genetic material in extremophiles has created a “white gold rush,” generating profound geopolitical tensions that test the stability of the Antarctic Treaty System. This article's primary objective is to analyze the complex political landscape surrounding this issue. Using a documentary analysis methodology, this paper examines how the unregulated pursuit of these resources creates friction among international actors and strains the cooperative principles of the continent's governance regime. The results indicate that the current situation has led to a geopolitical deadlock, characterized by a three-way tension among the interests of claimant states, proponents of a common heritage framework, and technologically advanced nations that champion unrestricted research. This impasse perpetuates a regulatory vacuum that benefits a few and fosters inequity. It is concluded that this governance void poses an unsustainable threat to the integrity of the treaty system. The proactive development of a bespoke protocol, featuring a dual-track system to separate science from commerce and a benefit-sharing mechanism directed toward conservation, is not merely an option but a critical necessity to preserve both the Antarctic environment and its unique legacy of international cooperation.
